The sound of waves enveloping the shore filled the beach. The white sand grew darker as the water simmered into its surface. Families and couples ate dinner with a backdrop of the pinkish sunset. Our chicken tandoori was set out beautifully, and the air was cool enough to enjoy a warm meal without feeling shivers. All of my family faces were gleaming from joy and satisfaction. Everything seemed perfect, and it was indeed perfect. I am in love with that moment forevermore.
It was in the year of 2018, and my sister was off to a college all the way across the country. That meant that we would get to be together as a family only once a year since I would be off to a boarding school myself. The summer of 2018 was the last proper holiday we would have as a family, and we wanted to do something extremely memorable. That was when we decided that we had to go to goa. Goa is an extremely popular tourist destination, and it is popular for a reason. The weather is a nice thirty degrees, and the area is intentionally designed to attract tourists, meaning that there are countless restaurants, street foods, memo shops, and hotels. It is a location you have to go once in a lifetime.
We planned on staying for a week, three days at the beach, and the other days exploring goa. Our days would be spent in the sea with no consciousness of time. It was a wonderful period of days that felt like a fleeting memory of a dream. Every passing moment was filled with joy and excitement. Each day embodying a spell in paradise. Each day a bit closer to the end of our last holiday.
I remember one morning where my father and I decided to go for a swim early in the morning. We took the bikes in the abandoned roadway, the sun was just peeking out, and it was a race against time to reach the water for the sunrise. And it was worth every waking moment of it. The water was glassy blue, and the sky was coloured in warm hues of yellow, canary, and daffodil. As the light reflected, the fish jumped out of the sea. Droplets of saltwater shimmering in myriads of colours. The sunrise, while it lasted, was one of the most beautiful mornings I have ever seen. I would live that moment time and time again if I had a choice.
Goa afterward was not only the name of a place but a memory, an emotion, and a part of me. The trip to goa was not only our last holiday but definitely one of our best also. It was a trip that takes a lifetime to forget, and even so, you will always remember the feel of it.
