Who You Are

Wadana Kakakhel, Grade 12
UWCEA Moshi

“Oppressed”, “timid”, “meek”, words echo in the air
as you spend yet another day trying to prove your liberty.
Freedom of choice, they say, yet they view you as a threat.
“France votes in favor of the hijab ban” hits the news.
Stories of Muslims all around the world haunt you,
but there is always a beacon of hope in the darkness.
The modest fashion model, hiphop dancer, gym enthusiast…
just some examples of the the beautiful hijabis
that are working day and night to fulfill their dreams.
You aspire to wear your hijab like a crown and find
comfort in those around you going through the same struggles.
A hijabi’s face radiates “noor” and the warmth in her heart
shines through all her good deeds and kind intentions.
I dream of a world where they see you for who you are
