Asja Šahović, Grade 12
UWC Mostar
I am Asja Sahovic and I attend UWC Mostar. Before coming here, I went to a public high school in my city Doboj, but I knew I did not belong there. When I first heard about UWC and its mission, I immediately fell in love with it. One of my biggest passions is traveling and meeting new people. I came here mostly because of my desire to pursue this on a daily basis, as well as to learn from them both academically and socially. Even though we all are from different places, people have the power to make it feel like home and find similarities in our divergence.
When I just came to Mostar, the first few weeks were hard to adjust to. It took a lot of time and patience. But now, I can only express the words of gratitude. There has not been a day where I regret coming here. Of course, there are days when I feel homesick, but I am so happy to be in a community that does not allow me to be sad or feel excluded. Even though I do have a friend group, we socialize with the rest of the community daily. We spend our time at the beautiful river Neretva that has cafes with views, beaches, and platforms. I cannot even count how many amazing memories I have in these places. In summer, the river is still extremely cold, but we use the opportunity to soak up some sun. However, in winter, it is a beautiful place to relax as there are not a lot of people there.
In UWC, we do not only learn in school - we learn about the world around us. The opportunity to be around so many different people with diverse interests is the beauty of our community. All of us came with the same goal of wanting to grow independently as people, as well as trying to make the world a better place. We also learn about things we would never understand if it wasn’t for our friends and teachers who help us learn. Personally, I was not educated enough on important topics such as politics in the world, homophobia, and racism. Now, I am grateful to my friends for giving me the opportunity to learn more about it and grow as a person.
I think that the ability to be a part of UWC is so amazing I can’t even begin to describe it. Here, everyone can flourish, learn about things they are interested in and get out of their comfort zone. Connections we make here and lessons we learn today will stay with us forever. This to me is more important than any regular school’s education could ever be.
