Zita Gloria INEZA TETA, Grade 12
UWCEA Moshi Campus
Becoming a successful doctor, owning a huge hospital, saving millions of lives, and playing in the WNBA is what I would say if you asked me the question five years ago. As I grow up I realize that I have spent so much time dreaming too big, forgetting about the little joys of life such as going out with friends or spending some time relaxing.
For the last year, I have been learning that there is more to life than just dreaming big. In the UWC community, I learnt that there is caring for others, doing activities that I love and living the dream today. Through seeing life from multiple perspective, this diverse community has taught me that there so such thing as enjoying the life as it is today and not leaving the joys for tomorrow as it is not promised
Through my CAS experience I got to experience new things and strengthen my skills. As part of the KCMC service, I was able to interact with patients, care for them and be there for them on the journey to recovery. I was able to visit the pediatric oncology ward. I had several interactions with cancer patients and got a chance to experience the world through their lens. I brought food to sick children, shadowed doctors for a whole week and even got to witness a hysterectomy.
In Basketball I got to play a tournament, raising money for an orphanage. I also met with friends, built my leadership skills and stepped out of my comfort zone every time I set my foot on the court. I learnt how to overcome my fears in Beginners swimming and had fun in U19 football. I enjoyed dancing in the Afro Dance club and Singing in the community choir. Knowing that arts is not my strongest talent, being part of these clubs brought the joy of learning something new with friends and doing it just for fun.
As I leave the UWC community, I hope to find a new place where I call home. A place where I am free to explore my hobbies and expand my skills. A place where I am allowed to dream big but also start living the dream. I want to continue my studies as I prepare myself for the “big dream”. I dream of a college where I am free to do research with my professors but also free to hangout with my friends. I also want a college where I can play ball and be great at biomedical engineering at the same time.
As I enroll in college, I would like to keep building my leadership skills while also serving the community and I find no other place to do it other than Johns Hopkins University. Right now, getting admitted to Johns Hopkins is my biggest hope and dream because I believe it will prepare me to become a better leader, athlete and scientist. All prepared for medical school! Maybe one day becoming a US certified doctor will no longer be a dream but reality. And having a hospital of my own will be a dream to consider, lol!
As we grow up, our dreams and hopes change. My biggest hope after UWC is staying open minded and believing in myself. Exploring what the world has to offer and making use of it. This is what will allow me to, one day, call myself “Doctor Zita” or even better “former NCAA champion, now attending cardiothoracic surgeon at Johns Hopkins Hospital”
